New Year, New You, New Dishes – True Food Kitchen

If you’ve been reading my blog since the beginning, then you are probably thinking, “Wow she writes a lot about True Food Kitchen.” Well yes, that is true for two reasons: 1) I really love it and there is always something new to write about, 2) they change their menu at least four times a year to keep ingredients fresh depending on what is in season. I think that #2 should speak for #1 there…

Since my last visit in October, a couple new items were added, and I realized I had failed to try a couple items that were added back then. As always, my expectations were exceeded yet again, and it was a spectacular night. I was especially thankful for my amazing server, Jen, who also helped me last time. Honestly, the food is really stellar, but if the hospitality throughout the ENTIRE restaurant wasn’t as extraordinary as it is, I probably wouldn’t return. I’m talking top-of-the-line, jaw-droppingly incredible. I don’t know how they do it, but so consistently make-you-feel-at-home!

So now on to the food.

My guest and I went for a variety of dishes (it was her first time at TFK!) and gladly took home some leftovers! The spread consisted of a couple of my favorites, and a couple new things…

Some TFK Classics

  • Farmers Market Crudités : This is, like, True Food’s most Instagrammed, classic starter. It was my first time, however, finally ordering it! And wow. I’ve been missing out. The perfect combination of fresh, lightly-blanched, assorted veggies,tfk4 served chilled over ice with a BOMB black olive dip and Tzatiki sauce (both house-made, of course.). This is SO simple, yet I don’t know any other restaurant that offers such a light, healthy, appetizer?? Reason #1 I love TFK.
    • Side Note : They now have Happy Hour (!!) and you can get a smaller portion of this for only $7!
  • Mediterranean Quinoa Salad : I randomly ordered this on my last visit when one of the managers pointed it out to me, and tfk1now I am hooked. I’m not sure if it is those crunchy Marcona almonds, the feta cheese,  the oregano vinaigrette, or the combination of those elements that just have me weak… This is a MUST-ORDER salad.
  • Teriyaki Quinoa Bowl : If it is your first time to True Food Kitchen, you have to try this bowl or the tfk2Ancient Grains Bowl. Two items that I feel also very accurately present the splendors of TFK in one dish. With everything being so fresh and house-made, you know that this is going to be a winner. Their teriyaki sauce? 100%.

NOW for the SEASONAL/NEW GOODIES!

  • VEGAN Butternut Squash Pizza on Gluten-Free Crust : If you’re vegan, you will never get bored with TFK. Why? They seasonally change their vegan pizza, which I really respect! I always say this, so I am just going to say it again. Their house-made vegan almond ricotta is the BEST DAMN vegan cheese I have EVER had. Anywhere. And on their pizzas?tfk7 Ugh. This was also the first time trying their gluten-free crust, and I definitely like it BETTER! Now this pizza as a whole? Boom. I want to say it is my favorite of their vegan pizzas yet. The butternut squash slices, the smoked onions (UGH! YUM!), the kale, the perfect amount of dried cranberries, and the GLORIOUS dollops of “ricotta”…. Wrap me in a blanket, feed me this pizza, and just call it a day.
    • Side Note : They now are offering a SECOND Vegan pizza : Tomato & Arugula!
  • Roasted Heirloom Carrots : These babies are the perfect side-kick for your meal. And they are definitely share-able- even if you are a rabbit like me. tfk8All different colored carrots atop this phenomenal greek yogurt sauce, sprinkled with pistachios and… DILL, which I am obsessed with. I was so surprised at how truly filling these are! If you really love veggies like me, you must try these.

Now saving the BEST for last……

  • The NEW Cashew Pad Thai : Oh. my. gosh. Like. I don’t even have words for this… Ugh, I am tearing up trying to type. Ok. Seriously. I LOVEEEEEEEEEE Thai food. Pad Thai. I’m sold. When I saw that tfk3this new Pad Thai replaced the Red Chili Noodles, I was a little skeptical. Could True Food Kitchen really make a GOOD Pad Thai that didn’t sacrifice flavor for fresh and healthiness? Shelby, what a stupid question. How could you doubt them!? I tfk6was SO wrong. This is probably the BEST Pad Thai I have ever had. It is packed with “kombu, rice noodle, zucchini, mushroom, eggplant, gai lan, bean sprout, thai basil, tamarind” and YES it is pretty spicy! Apparently, instead of continuing to waste the leftover kombu (edible kelp that is VERY good for you!) used in making the sauce for the edamame dumplings, the chefs decided to repurpose the scraps for this dish. How cool!? The best part of this dish was that it didn’t leave me feeling nasty, oily, and sick like most Pad Thai. This is now my go-to. Pro-tip: add shrimp!

So, if you aren’t salivating by now, then I’m sorry and I’m not sure what is wrong with you. If you are working hard to stick to those New Year’s Resolutions and eat healthier, then True Food Kitchen is for you. You can definitely feel good about everything you eat here, and you don’t have to worry about lacking any flavor.
