Sights & Bites: The BusTOURant

Whenever I travel to a new city, there are two main things I am focused on: sights and food. However, short trips make getting all the sights and all the bites in to the schedule a bit difficult. On my latest three-day trip to Edinburgh, I was more than ecstatic to come across a new company called “Bustourant.”

Their concept is simple but genius: Sit back in their luxurious bus, enjoy the beautiful sights of the city, and taste some traditional Scottish cuisine.

The husband-and-wife team behind Bustourant managed to take an old, double-decker bus and transform him (“Robert the Bus”) in to a bright vibrant restaurant on wheels. IMG_3218Downstairs, there is a complete kitchen where the team cooks up the food and even a restroom for guests. Upstairs, guests can lounge comfortably at their table with uniquely designed table setups to secure food and drink along the bumpy ride.

Guests can choose between two tours: afternoon tea and evening tea. Each tour has a unique route and menu, which you can checkout on their website here. I had a IMG_3233chance to take the evening tea tour where I was blown away at the sites along the coast. It was refreshing to get away from the busy city centre and journey along the outskirts of town. The sights were absolutely breathtaking, especially as the sun began to set. During the journey, we were served two courses of small bites. The first three-tiered tower to arrive on our table included a “Haggis Bon Bon,” cucumber slices with smoked salmon, and a little pot of braised venison stew with a couple tiny potatoes. A little later, the second tower appeared with a sweet and salty duo. The bottom tier had a selection of Scottish cheese, while the middle and top tiers had a selection of tiny desserts and sweets. To wash the food down, guests can enjoy soft drinks or bring their own bottle of wine/beer.

If you are looking to do something unique on your next trip, the Bustourant is definitely for you! IMG_3249They currently have tours in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, but hopefully they will expand soon.
