Tasty Times in Trastevere with Eating Europe

My final day in Italy was bittersweet, to say the least. However, I’m pretty sure I ended it on the best possible way… A 4-hour evening on an Eating Europe food tour with a superb guide, Luke. I would not have had it either other way!

When I discovered Eating Europe and their many foodie tours throughout Europe, I knew I would be getting an authentic Italian eating experience. What really stood about about this tour in particular was the incredible history, culture, & passion from our guide Luke- who seemed to know just as much about history as he did food. Our second stop of the tour, “Spirito di Vino,” was probably the highlight of the entire tour for me.

This little restaurant was nestled off the beaten path on a quiet street, and I would have never imagined the history lying below. Luke took us inside and down to the tiny, private wine cellar where we would stop for a wine and “Magro di maiale alla mazio,” or lean pork stew. We quickly learned the cellar’s age… more than 100 years older than the Colosseum! The cellar is even protected by the Roman government due to its history dating back to 80 BC, so you can only imagine how neat this was. This stop of the tour was filled with so much Roman history, which paired perfect with the Roman stew. If you want to see this cellar (and its hidden pathway…), you may just have to book this tour yourself!

Throughout the night, we tasted a wide variety of lesser-known Roman dishes which truly set this tour apart from the others. Our four-hour feast included everything from a Jewish-style fried artichoke, to a sit-down dinner of amatricana and wine. Everything about the evening was splendid, surprising, tasty, and taught me so much about Roman history and cuisine. My final night in Rome was perfect, thanks to Eating Europe! I am really excited about joining some of their other tours throughout Italy and their other European destinations!
