You know when you say you’re going to do something and then… well… life happens and it keeps getting “postponed”? This is exactly what has been happening to me the past four months with my weekend getaway to Brussels. I’m so happy to say that it FINALLY (very last-minute) made it through the execution phase this past weekend. So why exactly was I so fixated on visiting Brussels? Like with most of my trips, the driving factor was obviously cuisine and food tours… No shame here!
When I began my activity research, one of the first things I came across was “The Brussels Journey,” aka the #1 food tour in Brussels. “Woah,” I thought to myself. “This has got to be some food tour.” According to their website, I would be signing up for 4.5 hours of walking, chocolate tasting, and beer drinking while learning about these two Belgian treasures. Um, could that be any more convincing? Based on their five-star TripAdvisor rating, I could tell that I would be in for a treat.

So when I finally arrived in Brussels, you can bet the first thing I did was make my way to Chocopolis, the starting point of my Brussels Journey. Our awesome tour guide, met our group of about fifteen and the afternoon was off! As the evening progressed, we stopped at three chocolate shops and three bars/taverns. At each “sweet” shop, we were showered with chocolates- I was quite surprised at how generous each stop was! While we sampled a variety of chocolates in each store, our guide educated us about the different types of beans and varieties.

After the sweet part of the tour had concluded, we began our “beer crawl.” Each bar or tavern we visited, a variety of different Belgian beers (Trappist, Lambic, IPAs, and more!) were served, described, and enjoyed. If there was anything we didn’t like, our guide would find us something different- no problem! Throughout the entire tour, we each received a total of eight very generous pours. If it wasn’t for the snacks provided, I’m confident that the entire group would have been off our rockers!
At the second tavern, we were gifted the most amazing Belgian frites to share (and fight over!). At the final tavern, everyone was ecstatic to be greeted with platters of cheese, meat, and bread!

When the tour came to a conclusion, my colleague and I had a newfound love for Belgian chocolate and obsession with Belgian beer. The tour was definitely the best way to experience Brussels, learn of its “treasures,” see the city, make new friends, and spend the day! I 100% recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Brussels for the first time… even if you think you don’t like beer or chocolate!
