Camellia Tea Ceremony: A Can’t-Miss in Kyoto

If you find yourself in the cultural city of Kyoto while in Japan and looking for unique experiences, joining a Camellia Tea Ceremony is a MUST! During your visit, you will learn the meticulous process of making proper matcha tea with an expert instructor in a private or small group setting.

The little “machiya,” or Japanese wooden town house, is situated right in the Kiyomizu area along the way up to Kiyomizu-Dera Temple, making it a very convenient stop during your travels. During the 45-minute session, you will learn the history and culture surrounding the tea before watching your instructor perform the process. After watching the expert, you will have a chance to make your own cup of matcha… which was DELICIOUS and tasted so natural and pure.

Before visiting Japan, I was not a fan of matcha tea. This quickly changed, however, when I realized how wonderful the real stuff tasted- especially in Kyoto; the home to matcha. Even as a matcha “noobie,” the ceremony was one of the best experiences I had on my entire Japan trip. It was so fascinating to learn the delicate and specific process to making the tea that I would have never expected. Each and every move is very particular and must be performed slowly and carefully. My instructor was very knowledgeable, sweet, and had answers for all of my curiosities. Before leaving, I bought my own high-quality “Uji” matcha powder so I can recreate at home.

This was such a peaceful and unique experience- definitely one you don’t want to miss: tea lover or not!

For more information or booking, you can check out their website here. There is also the option of renting a kimono to wear during your ceremony!
