A LOCAL BREWPUB WITH A STORY – 1886 BREWING CO.

When you dine or drink out, how often do you think about the building itself you are in? Probably never, since it’s so rare to find yourself in somewhere of historic value and complete renovations. That’s what made me SO excited to one of the newer additions to “the Orange Circle,” aka Old Town Orange.

After the pandemic, I was shocked to see that the large antique furniture store I had grown up walking past hundreds of times was now a brewery… Say what?! This seemed sad to me and, naturally, I figured it was just another typical brewery that completely took over the place with no concern for the historic value of the building. It wasn’t until my sister was raving about some “AMAZING Brussel sprouts” at a place called 1886 Brewing Co. that made me think again.

For my birthday this year, I finally decided to return to this former-antique shop and experience the 1886 Brewpub & Restaurant. Not only did I have an amazing experience, but I learned that the name 1886 comes from the year the building was initially built, with wood brought in from South America. And none of it was touched with the renovation. Dining somewhere that appreciates and respects history – now that makes 1886 Brewing Co. even more commendable.

During my visit, my family of 7 had the pleasure of sitting out in the back patio on a Saturday – away from all of the noise. We were well attended to and cared for – even on a hustling & busting night. After beers and cocktails came out all around, we decided to get the appetizers rolling – which included a progressive feast of the “signature” crispy Brussel sprouts, the house made hummus, the chori-queso, the fried cauliflower, the jumbo Bavarian pretzel, and, of course a side of fries. Wow. Wow. Wow. Honestly, if 1886’s menu was just all sorts of appetizers, I would not be mad about. They really have their appetizer game down to a perfect. Being someone who loves communal dining, this made our night even more fun as we all passed around and “experimented” with the different dishes and flavors. Now, did the highly praised Brussel sprouts live up to expectations? It was a universal “HECK YES!” Let me just say, there was drool on the table, and these little devils were talked about for the next several days in our house. We all also agreed that the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel was one of the best soft pretzels we had ever had – including our little 1-year-old peanut munchkin, who is quite the soft pretzel snob. The fries were another fan favorite, especially of mine. Just the type of fries I love, and these were actually insanely delicious… especially with my 1886 sauce lineup!

Entrees included salads and fish & chips all around, with the fish & chips taking the crown. Since we all let each other try our dishes, it was unanimous that the fish & chips were another rave worthy dish, hands-down. Perfectly crispy, not overly fish-y, and excellent portion size. This will be my order next time for sure.

The whole night was filled with smiles, fun, excellent service, & delicious food & drinks, making it a perfect birthday dinner with my family. When you find yourself at 1886 Brewing Co., do not skip the “appetizer feast,” the fish & chips, or the sauce lineup! Here it is: beer cheese dip, blue cheese cream (!), “ravigote” sauce, house sauce, and BBQ sauce.
